It's worth it if you've got the time...

I just re-watched (or rather "scanned" through) my friend's VHS copy of RUDE BOY today, mostly watching the Clash's various song performances. Even though the story with Ray interacting with the band is mostly a bore, the sheer performances are worth viewing the film. I know I trashed this movie in an earlier review, but I'm now saying it's worth checking out just for the music only. I had the privilege of seeing the band once in St. Paul, and there is something with them on stage that's never been duplicated. See what all the fuss was about from the great band from 25 years ago...

I can't see why everyone finds Ray's story so boring? Why is it? It's the everyday life of a '70s street punk! How cool is that!!!

I'd have to agree with 'nathan-1' completely, he's a good character because to lead the film as he's not the stereotypical punk like you might see in the film 'Sid & Nancy'. He is calm and there just to enjoy the music and get on with his life and I think that's an importent aspect, NOT to stereotypicalise the film.

Mick singing "Stay Free" has got to be one of the best moments in the whole thing. Always brings shivers up my spine!

I ended up giving this movie a 7. The scenes of the band playing live and of them recording are a 10 all the way. Ray's story seems tacked on though, in the end it works and there are some truly great moments but it bounces back and forth from inspired to boring. They actually had this playing on IFC for awhile which is where I saw it. Now I just wish someone would re-release the movie Dance Craze or at least put it up on a server somewhere.
