How could such a tough man commit such a cowardly act

Jake was literally, a Bronx Bull. In the fight with Robinson or anyone, Jake never went down. He was brutal and tough in the ring, one of the baddest boxers to walk the Earth. (Real life and in the film) Yet he beats up his poor, defenseless beautiful wife. How could such a tough guy beat his wife like a little wimp? Don't get that. 99 percent of the time any guy that hits a woman or child is a coward. How could you say Jake was a coward though yet he fought men left and right for a living?
