The Screenplay!

Always sad when the screenplay and final cut don't match. Appears a ton of stuff that was shot was lopped out of Prom Night, and most of what remains in the film was edited in completely out of order. Here's the script:

Thanks, always wanted to read it.
Apparently Jamie Lee Curtis hated Prom Night because the script she agreed to do was completely different from what the film came to be. Quoting her own words "all that psychopath killing stuff was added post production and the film felt like a Halloween rip-off".

It had been understood all along that not everything in the script was filmed (it was only a 30 day shoot, not counting the 'psychopath killing stuff' that Peter Simpson forced them to add in pickups because he wanted a 'Halloween rip-off') and it would have been a 3-hour movie if they did film everything, so it had to be pruned considerably, but I was rather surprised to learn how little of it actually was filmed. I have a photo showing Sykes and McBride talking outside the school with a reporter present and that wasn't even filmed.

There was some really good stuff in the script that it's unfortunate to learn never went before the cameras - the stalking scenes at the indoor pool; the car ride scenes, etc. On the other end of the stick, the Adele and Davy characters added nothing and were deservedly tossed. Vicki should have been dumped as well. If she was there to serve any purpose besides showing her tight little ass, I don't know what it was.

I'm confused. I thought the "psychopath killing stuff" was the masked killer killing the teens responsible for Robin's death. That's all in the script. I was having a hard time imagining how Prom Night would work without the kills and what the hell was in the script JLC saw.
So she meant the red herring plot about the disfigured guy who escaped the hospital and killed the nurse? Yeah that was pretty much useless to the plot and non interesting, but I wouldn't say it killed the film.

And you leave Vicki's ass alone ;)

Curtis wasn't terribly clear but, correct, she was referring to the Leonard Mirch subplot, the obvious "Halloween" rip-off aspect, which is what Simpson forced them to tack in after the original shoot. That's not in the original screenplay, and Bill Gray said he had nothing to do with scripting any of it. Not all of those scenes were directed by Paul Lynch either, although I forget which ones he shot vs. which ones he didn't. I haven't listened to the commentary yet so perhaps it's stated on there.

Well, I said it was a tight one, didn't I? I certainly didn't mind seeing it!

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up.
Yeah, the Leonard Mirch plot is by far my least favorite in the film. You keep expecting something to happen that will add anything to the main plot and nothing does. I wonder what would be the use of Nick's father without that plot lol.

But you know, there's one thing good about keeping Mirch in the story. The police found someone to blame for Robin's death so the case was closed. On the contrary there would be a more minucious investigation and they would certainly get to the kids.
Remember Kim saw Nick walking outside the windows of the abandoned building a few minutes before Robin's death. If the police decided to really question him, I think he'd say something about what they did. But since Mirch was in the picture, it was easier to frame a known sex offender than a group of kids.
