Actually, a lot of horror fans specifically don't like Prom Night because of its lack of gore and its often tedious pacing in the first half of the film. Still, the final sequences are considered classic and this is one of the films the cemented Jamie Lee's role as "Scream Queen".

It's possible you won't find a bigger Prom Night fan than me, anywhere in the world, but as far as "horror" films go, Prom Night isn't the film I reach for when I actually want to watch one! I love Prom Night for all its incidentals, the opening and closing sequences, the soundtrack, the criminally underdeveloped storyline, but viewed as a whole, the whole thing doesn't quite work, which is probably evidenced by the fact that I actually haven't sat and watched the ENTIRE film for quite a number of years, despite owning more DVD copies than you can poke the proverbial stick at.

FWIW.

You can rest your mind at last, you've resolved the horrors past...

I couldn't have said it better!

Well I wouldn't say a true horror fan considers gore to be a big part of the picture.

That's kind of a subjective question; I mean, I'm not a big fan of A Nightmare on Elm Street, which many people consider a hailing classic, but I'm still a major horror fan. It's fine if you don't like this film, but you have to recognize its importance in the genre.

I love Prom Night; the remake was awful.

¡Buena suerte!

I just watched this and, aside from the opening and Jamie Lee's acting, I wasn't that impressed either. Its funny how, even though I grew up on 80s horror, I'm just now getting around to seeing all these movies that were remade recently. Makes me wonder what I was doing with my life back then lol Reading Stephen King novels, I suppose. So many movies out there, hard to know about or see them all unless you had really cool/hip friends.

Anyway, I think taste is all subjective and you can definitely be both a true horror fan and not like this movie. That's how I am with Evil Dead - maybe I'm the only one, but its just too camp and gross for my taste. I don't mind gore/gross, but it has to add to the story. Or Halloween - its ok, but for Carpenter, give me The Thing any day. Now that's creepy. I think I just built Halloween up in my head too much by the time I saw it. Same with The Exorcist. That's the beauty of horror, there's so many styles and sub-genres - you're bound to be into some more than others.

I always like a movie that doesn't have to rely on gore. This is why I love Halloween and Psycho. Now if gore is involved (Saw, parts of Scream) that's fine but it won't add to my experience.

In this case I thought Prom Night had both. I mean honestly a guy's head is decapitated in front of the whole school. How is that not gore? But it's the suspense that I love about this. The creepy phone calls and such. The red herrings. The whodunnit. For some reason time has not helped this movie but it was miles better than any remake they make today (thanks freaking Michael Bay).

Nobody would remember this movie if Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't in it.

Nah, it's fine. This movie isn't my case either. Even Terror Train was better, altho that one sucked too. The suspense level was pretty low for my taste. A lot gore like nowadays is not necessarily, but, please, some suspense xD However, I think the remake of this sucked even more.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

No. I dont like 'The Burning' or 'Nightmare on Elm Street' much, and tons of horror fans like both of those.
I do like this movie though, although I agree there are some things they could have done better.
