was olive oil realy that annoying in the cartoons?
I really hated her in this movie. She seemed rude and self centered. One of my friends suggested it was because of Shelley Duvall, but she has never annoyed me in any other movie.

shareOlive Oyl wasn't rude and self centered as much in the cartoons, she at times she was stuck-up. She'd fall in love with Bluto until she realizes what a creep he is and then tries going back to Popeye.
shareOlive was a terrible woman, shallow and stuck-up in the 1950s cartoons, insensitive and completely stupid in the 1930s.
Its true the character in the movie seems more intimidated by Bluto from the start, whereas in the cartoons from the 1950s, Olive drops into Bluto's arms all starry-eyed as soon as he flexes his biceps.
That is, until Bluto's sexual predator side tries to take advantage of her, then she's screaming for Popeye.
In the cartoons of the 1930s, Bluto is always intimidating and hardly ever wins Olive's affection, so I assume the movie character remains true to the earlier version. Still, Bluto the sexual predator is a "more fun" villain.

Haven't you seen the movie?
Olive annoyed the crap outa me in the cartoons "POYPEYE!!! POPEYE!!!
If I cold be anyman, I'd be a peliman
Well she must be something special, otherwise Popeye wouldn't keep risking his neck to save her. Nor would he and Bluto keep duking it out over her.
shareSpecially challenged maybe. Although Popeye would actually be the mentally handicapped one, not to mention his freakish arms, squinty eyes, and incomprehensible babbling. He has to take whatever he can get.

I'm easily annoyed, but she didn't annoy me at all. She was just funny!
Seems like I didn't care for her in the cartoons, but I don't remember them enough to know for sure.

I remember watching the cartoon's from time to time when I was a kid and I always thought Olive was a drama queen and Popeye was a frickin idiot for saving her all the time. I kept thinking what the hell does Popeye and Bluto see in this skinny thing who kept playing mind games when with them. But in the movie she was just a BITCH.
shareHonestly sometimes I think that it is more of a battle over who can win the prize, but it doesn't really matter what that prize is. Its the whole, always wanting what you can't have thing.

It's been a while since I have seen the old cartoons, and I don't think I ever saw the movie, just posters. But how could you not think that Shelley Duvall was not the perfect choice for Olive Oyl. All the make-up department had to do was put her in the right outfit. Wouldn't be surprised if she used to watch the cartoons herself as a kid and play Olive Oyl. They used to run them in the theaters when I was a kid but back in the Seventies, they ran them on television. These were the ones where Popeye comes out of the ship's cabin double doors. Really early thirties. But what got me was the theme song played on a kazoo (a pitch pipe instrument) at the beginning of each cartoon. At that time, I was a new husband with two young girls who watched it on their television. Daddy was trying to get some sleep on Saturday morning and everytime, I dropped off, I heard "Dah-dat-dat-dat-dah-dah dah" (I'm Popeye the Sailor Man). That really used to cramp my shorts.
shareOlive Oyl has always annoyed me. I never like her character. Shelly Duvall was good for the part because she is annoying and very funny looking, just like olive oyl was in all the old cartoons and comics. I absolutely hate that character.
shareShelley Duvall just has that quality naturally. I was rooting for Jack in the shining. That's how annoying Shelley Duvall is to me...
shareOlive Oyl is meant to be seen as a odd woman who has a lot of confidence, despite her looks.

Olive also can't carry a tune in a bucket when she tries to sing. perfect example is the Popeye cartoon "Beware of Barnacle Bill"
Olive pretty much played the boys against each other, and asked Popeye for help when Bluto got to aggressive.
I do notice that once Olive sees Popeye stand up for her brother and help her family that she starts falling for him.
I think Olive is kind of Like Bella, no logical reason why two guys keep fighting over her, but they still do.

I guess in the cartoon she was less annoying because her appearances came in small doses. Here she's talking, pouting and singing throughout a 2 hour movie.
Shelley Duvall IS Olive Oil. But Olive is an annoying character. Couldn't be helped I suppose.
