This film is just plain fun with great music. Some say it was not a success but the film certainly did not lose money. Made back the complete budget and about 30 million in profit during its theatrical run. Only in America would people say 30 mill profit was not a success! It deserves a good remastered blu-ray.
shareI'd say this movie was the best they could've done with the Popeye material -- there's only so much you can do in trying to make a live action movie out of a cartoon. I think they did alright here.
shareThe general rule is that a movie needs to make between 1.5 times to 2 times its budget to make a profit. So while it did make a profit, it wasn't much of one.
Regardless, this movie is seen as a flop because it did not do the business that was expected of it. It was supposed to be one of the years biggest blockbusters, and it did not accomplish that. So while the film did make money, it was assumed that it would make a lot more than it did. So that is why many in the film industry consider it a flop.
