Two questions....

1. As we all know, spinach is what gives Popeye his Superman-like powers. However, it seems that during his boxing match with Oxblood Oxhart, he managed to take him down WITHOUT the green stuff. If you recall, Oxhart was knocking Popeye all over the ring. Then he stops, stares straight ahead and spins his pipe as if to say, "times to get seriousk." Then he takes down Oxhart with only a few hits. If he didn't need spinach to summon his strength there and he could defeat a Goliath like Oxhart, how come he couldn't do that with Bluto?

2. So how did Popeye, Pappy and the Oyls get off Scab Island? Both ships were destroyed?

My best guesses are:

1) Something got lost in editing and wounded up on the cutting room floor

2) Popeye downed another can of spinach and swam back to Sweet Haven to commandeer another ship.

In regards to the first question, he is able to fight others if he can gather his strength in time. With Bluto, he never got the chance the way Bluto hit him, unlike the toughs in the diner and Oxblood. In the final sequence, same thing, Bluto is able to overpower him quickly so Popeye can never gather enough strength in time. When he was force fed the spinach by Bluto, that gave him the strength to escape the tied up anchor and knock Bluto out. As for the other one, I'm sure they rebuilt the boat so they could get back. They didn't want to bother with that in the film because they felt it wasn't important.
