why the hate for this movie?

I loved it and have watched it many times

It wasn't made by someone from Monty Python, is probably the reason. I've also loved this movie since I first saw it as a kid. It's different, and the music is memorable.

Why ? Are You Seriously Asking This ? This Movie Is An Utter Failure. The Music Is Awful,The Acting Is Horrible,And The Story ? What In The Hell Kind Of Story Was That ? Totally Awful. It Was Like The Movie Was Made By People Who Never Watched The Damn Cartoon,Just Looked At Some Pictures Of The Characters And Ran With it.

I watched the cartoon on tv almost religiously as a kid before the movie ever came out. Still loved it. Quit trying to force you opinion of this movie. We get it you hate it.

The real question is why your post is typed like that?

To me , the musice is the worst, the acting is the wrost, and so on. The set is the only thing that is worth metioning and even THAT gets on my nerves after 20 minutes into the film..

It's one of those situations where enough people have used the movie as a punchline, that people who've never seen it go into it assuming it's going to be awful. So instead of watching the movie on its own terms, it's easier to dump on it.

I suppose I can see being confused if you're expecting a straight-up "kids movie," although I've got friends who loved this movie when they were kids. Yes, it's a weird movie. It's more invested in the original Segar comic strip than the animated shorts (and has nothing to do with TV Popeye.) But the story is pretty simple and clear. The songs aren't pop hits but the serve the story well. And so much work went into coordinating all those athletic hilarious crowd sequences (the fight in the restaurant!).

A.I. Is a terrible movie. The Matrix is a terrible movie. The entire Transformers franchise are terrible movies. As long as we mock attempts to do something weird and challenging, and reward lazy movies with single-page scripts and 10-digit effects budgets, we'll keep getting crap. Popeye was a great, ambitious movie, that doesn't get much credit because it's simpler to mock it.

Well said. I enjoyed Popeye the movie as a kid and love it even more now. Excellent pointing out that this movie is built around the Segar Popeye, which is the best and only version to watch of Popeye cartoons. To all those who hate it and can't stand it, You Don't Owe Us An Apology! We're going to watch it always.

I really like this movie until the singing starts to happen. Nilsson wrote great tunes for this, but some of the vocals are horrendous. To me that kills his efforts. Shelly Duvall’s voice is like nails on chalkboard when she sings. Just awful. In the end, a fun flick where I have to ignore some of those issues. Robin’s signing is actually pretty good, though. He was awesome as Popeye.

I went to see this at the theater when it came out, haven't seen it since. I was 9 years old and wasn't impressed at all. I don't know if I would like it if I saw it again or not.
