This movie VS. The Beyond

Which one is better and why?

Which one is gorier?

And at last, do these two movies have much difference because I read you can see them both as "surrealistic nightmares".

Gates of Hell is better... it's not really any more coherent, but it definitely has a darker and creepier atmosphere. Though it isn't as apocalyptic as the Beyond, it strives to tell a better story and I think it has a better feeling overall. Though, stylistically, you can definitely tell who directed both films.

The Beyond is gorier, because it has MORE gore scenes, but I think the gore in Gates of Hell is far more effective (the drill scene... holy *beep*).

reply

You cant compare the 2 to each other, The only thing they have in common is "The gates to hell" and some zombies here and there. Both are classic for their unique scenes of gore, in other words, neither one is better, they are both great.

I thought "The Gates of Hell" was gorier with "puke girl" and the drill scene.

But Gates of Hell takes too long for anything to happen while the Beyond is more consistent, so I like the latter film more.

I think the Beyond is much better than this flick, and also much gorier. Whats with all the pulling off the back of heads in this?! And the bit where the zombie rubs a load of worms in the girls face - WHY? Also, the ending is one of the lamest cop-outs in horror history.
Dont get me wrong, for all its faults I do like this flick, but I think that the Beyond rates as Fulci's best film.

They're both laughably bad (which makes them enjoyable in my book), but The Beyond had a slightly more coherent story than COTLD. So I like The Beyond a bit more.

i know this is the wrong post, but i only have a heavily edited version of this movie, it has hardly any gory scenes and you never see the drill going anywhere near the dudes head. my question is, why does the psychic woman scream at the end when she sees the little boy? i was very confused. it my not help that i only skimmed through the movie.

reply

Why do you only have some pathetic hacked up version of the movie? Get Anchor Bay's uncut DVD so you can see a high quality widescreen transfer of the movie with all of the gore intact. It's the ONLY way to watch this film.

I like City of The Living Dead better, better still is Zombi 2. I think The Beyond is one of Fulci's worst movies and a wee bit boring.

"I see dead people!"

reply

I found the Beyond to be pretty dull except for towards the end. I really liked City of the Living Dead and consider it to be one of Fulci's best films.

reply

While I do find The Beyond boring, I don't think his best film is City of The Libing Dead , Naw, It has to be House by The Cemetery or Zombi 2 .

"I shot him 6 times....he's not human!!"

reply

House by the cemetary? Come on man, that made the beyond's action and pacing look like Die Hard.

I'd have to say gates of Hell is better than the beyond. But just by a smidge.

The beyond is gross and enigmatic, and had a wonderfully slow and perfectly paced transition into a spooky paranormal atmosphere.

However, David warbeck shooting corpses point blank in the SIDE was aggrivating. Shoot them in the head, dumbass! (I know he was supposed to shoot them in the head, but he felt it was too dangerous, but it still bugs me and is probably why i give 'gates' the edge over it)
Although when he does unload a round into Jill's head, heh, man, that was fantastic special effects even for today, whew, that was, yeah, pretty sweet.

The gates of hell just built up better, and the gut puking scene was very very gross. And there is some intense suspence (the buried alive scene)

Well, City of the Living Dead, barf factor, watching the girl throw up her intestines, and the bench drill. The Beyond, the gouging of eyes, the dog ripping out the throat, and who can forget, the girl having her face blown off. Tough call, as its been about 15 years since i last saw "City" , and i have a uk dvd release of "The Beyond",and i always liked it, so for me "The Beyond" is my favourite.

reply

The beyond for sure!!! it was slow and gorier.Musics were really strange though and who could forget those gruesome scenes (especially the tarantula scene) anyway? Man,it was very disturbing. The Beyond is Lucio Fulci's masterpiece!!!

Yes, but these films and The New York Ripper brought Fulci to the attention of horror fans.If he hadn't had made his horror movies he probably wouldn't be as well known and loved by the horror/cult movie community as he is.

The Beyond is one of the best things ever, where as City is just really really good.

Objectively, City is quite slow and can be boring in paces, where as The Beyond is entertaining throughout, and has one of my all time favourite moments ever in, where David Warbeck and Catriona MacColl are in the restauraunt and the girl picks a phone up and calls to Warbeck: "doctor! Doctor!" You see him looking around and then the camera pullsback and she'#s right nect to him saying "doctor!" Amazing!

Anyway, I far prefer The Beyond.

I just watched City of the Living Dead, and found it to be just okay. The film had a good atmosphere and a few good gory bits, plus the basic concept for the story was pretty cool. Sadly, the film was really slow, even by Fulci standards, and the zombie make-ups were pretty lame. The ending was also rather anticlimactic.

I would consider The Beyond to be much better, with more creepy setpieces, better make-ups, and an ominous ending. I've enjoyed all of the Fulci films I've seen, and I would rank them the following:

1. Zombie
2. The Beyond
3. The House By The Cemetery
4. The Black Cat
5. City of the Living Dead
6. Lizard In A Woman's Skin
7. The New York Ripper
8. Don't Torture A Duckling
