VERY under-rated soundtrack!

I loved the soundtrack. It was perfect, and better than most american horror movies from around that time. I'm calling it under-rated because I have yet to see it mentioned in any other thread.

Yep. Fulci's movies, scattershot as they might have been in the story department, almost always had perfect soundtracks for the movies he was making.

City of the Living Dead's got a great, foggy atmosphere, but it would be a hell of a lot less without the warbling guitar over the heavy synth. Zombie without that thumping, marching score or The House by the Cemetery without its quasi-Bach are unimaginable.

You can thank Fabio Frizzi for that. He made music for many of his films.

Yes, i think it`s pretty good, but i think the theme song could have been used less. I think it kind of loses it effect because it`s used so much. I like it, but it`s just too much.

Wait-hold on a minute now.

You bought the soundtrack to City of the Living Dead?

As far as I know it was never released/made available for purchase.
From where/who did you buy it?

What country do you live in?
I'm in middle North America (ignorantly called United States), myself.

This is the only release of the score/soundtrack I know of and it's one of those 'only from a convention' things because it has one of those statements on the back of the jacket along the lines of, "Not made for Retail".

It was just about 100 dollars and luck that it was there for me to buy.

Oh yeah, it was so great. I loved how there were about 30 seconds of music written for the soundtrack, and then they just looped it over and over throughout the entire 500 minutes. Oh wait, the movie was only 90 minutes? Didn't seem like it!

the soundtrack, and some of the effects, really remind me of Phantasm. Phantasm came out the year before this... interesting. Rent Phantasm sometime and pls let me know if you agree.

You are toast, my toasty friend.

I was thinking the same thing about the Phantasm soundtrack being similar right before I read your post.

I don't think this soundtrack would have worked with any American made horror movie, but with Italian horror films it's a stylistic expectation. BTW, I loved the soundtrack!

This soundtrack is crying out for a re-issue. Preferably a deluxe LP version, with lots of artwork. Surely a company like Dagored or Akarma could sort this out? I don't know if there are rights issues, but that has never stopped Italian vinyl labels in the past.

reply

A lot of zombie movies and gore movies have a similar soundtrack because in the late 70's and early eighties that was the trend.

I prefer the synthesizer, throbbing beat in zombie films to the played out heavy metal soundtrack that have been used since Return of the Living Dead. Heavy metal only worked for return of the Living Dead and no other movie as far as I'm concerned. It's something about the throbbing beat and synthesizer that makes zombies creepier for some reason. Especially the slow shambling zombies. Lol

The OST will be released in 2013 by Death Waltz Recordings.
They did a wonderful job with Zombi 2 recently. It's gonna kick ass.

I think its not only the soundtrack, its also the atmosphere...I mean YEAH! I love Fabio Frizzi and all the OST he was involved (The Beyond, Zombi...) but this one...its so dark...I mean I can hear the first track of the Soundtrack and well...I just feel im in a foggy church with a dead priest....

One of my fave horror soundtracks ever and got the CD about 11 years ago at one of my city's conventions

You killed Captain Clown, YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN-The Joker on Batman TAS

reply

I LOVE Frizzi, but this soundtrack just sounded like a rehash of Zombi.

Yes, the main theme (played mainly during the final third and over the final scene) is awesome. Really, it's just a slight variation on the "Zombie" theme, but both are effective.

Cool.
