I cant watch this entire movie

This makes me really upset, because from what Ive watched...I liked. But I literally just tried to watch this movie twice. I fell asleep during the first 20 - 30 minutes, then I woke up to the menu screen. So I was upset and hit play again. I got a little further that time....but only by say....another 15-20. Hopefully im just really tired....

reply

Sorry dude, but you were not tired. The movie goes downill real quick after the first 20 minutes. It sets you up for a great flick, but then lets you down hard. Most fulci movies are that way, with the exception of zombie ( which was ok at best) I can't stand his movies.

I'm starting to feel this way. Utterly gutted by this film, I was exspecting zombies, not supernatural cretins who appear from nowhere.

Zombi were ok. Conquest was funny, but this was bad.

reply

the film is awful. i tried on 9 different occasions to watch it. i never got past the 30 minute marker. its truly awful, too complex and incredibly slow.

reply

This is the thing with horror movies. Guys who love them watched them when they came out. Not even the Exorcist holds up to a new movies standards with kids today. City of the Living Dead (aka. Gates of Hell)...I sw this in the drive ins. It scared the *beep* out of me at age 9...for sure! I watch it today...love it! But I would not expect any new comer to the movie 32 years after to get that.

reply

so true.... maybe the most overrated horror director of all time... all that crap talk how he is agenious and how atmospheric his movies are is just bull. he was just unable to make a good movie. if it wasn't for the gore, nobody would ever have cared about fulci. and even the gore is just disgusting and no fun most of the time. hate him.

reply

Besides Maniac, this is the greatest horror film ever made.

You might want to get a full 8 hours sleep then "Gore-Hound666?". I mean with a username like that you would think that there would be something concrete in your post regarding COTLD. Try a cup of coffee or maybe some Red Bull. Now back to the movie..Great film if you like Italian-themed horror. True, it might not be as good as The Beyond, but this is a solid film. When I saw this it was the Gates of Hell, I just recently purchased this film, Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit on Your Grave, and Last House on the Left.....more gore, violence and depravity than any normal person can stand to watch. Too bad for the normal people, they do not know what they are missing.

I agree 100% with this statement.

Those are good movies, my friend. I just purchased Pieces and had a great time after a long, hard day at work. Oh and I used to eat pizza all the time while watching this. It is a great movie, but it is so fake looking. This flick was just meant for a good time with friends who love horror.

all of Fulci's movies (from what I've seen) start to get weak around the mid-way point, but the last 20 to 30 minutes are almost always gold (Zombie 3 being an exception, the first 50 minutes were great but the second half blew, but he only directed 30 or so minutes of the finished film.) anyway, you should try to finish this one, it's pretty cool.

reply

ummm, no, sorry to say, but all you say is only good in the realm of "IMHO",Gorehound666 should not be mocked b/c he didn't seem to appreciate COTLD to the point of falling asleep not once but twice, *beep*, at least he tried.. Fulci made a name for himself by creating films only true retarded degenerates actually love, not to say there is no merit, the gore is most definitely gore, but it seems to be only there for shock value, there is never a good story, the acting is pure *beep* I *beep* hate low budget flicks that are done with what looks like a camcorder, but man, better then most *beep* 'course thats IMHO, or whatever, Cannibal H. meh, was good, I liked reading about the crap that the director had to more then the actual film mind you, I am really hoping that the remake is going to garner even near the same furor, I spit on your Grave is so dope, "One-eye" smokes that bitch to hell though. And as for "Last House on the Left"? damn skippy, I cannot seem to decide which version I liked more, You gotta love a horror movie that has the so called "good" people hunger for blood in a way that rapes the so called "badasses" of their edge

well golly that sounds lovely, sign me up

Do like I did, watch it in the middle of the day eating a pizza. Have a buddy there to wake you up if you start to drift off.

How in the HELL could you eat a pizza while watching THIS?????!!!!????

YUCK!!!!

"How in the HELL could you eat a pizza while watching THIS?????!!!!????"

As desensitized as I'd like to think i am, i fully agree here. Sure, the bulk of this film's violent, gore-drenched scenes are a total pleasure for us devotees of the extreme, but i *CAN'T* eat something and watch the 'bowels regurgitation' scene at the same time. No way - at least i know i couldn't when i tried a few years ago. It's all about the *SOUNDS* that unfortunate lady is making. Yes, the effects are obvious and rubbery; yes, the film carries a cheesy vibe much of the time... but trying to choke down food while seeing/hearing Daniela Doria suffer the unholy fate of vomiting her entire intestinal tract is a challenge, to say the least. =D I love this movie. It's so weird.

"GIALLO" Let's get snobby about it --

From Wiki: "Giallo" films are characterized by extended murder sequences featuring excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. The literary whodunit element is retained, but combined with modern slasher horror, while being filtered through Italy's longstanding tradition of opera and staged grand guignol drama. They also generally include liberal amounts of nudity and sex. (end)

No nudity in COTLD, but there's a music riff/"dirge" that starts playing whenever someone's gonna get killed...and that alone is freaky.

I love this flick! It's cinematographic "rawness" of a 1980 film on a budget...the story is strong and like Spielberg in "Poltergeist," plays on some very REAL human fears: finding a ghoul peeking at you thru your window, power drills are dangerous, being buried alive, etc.,...and you have a masterpiece GIALLO. It's gotta be appreciated for this. But not for everyone. And "NO," I wouldn't be eating a meal by watching this, either. A very creative use of maggots early on...

reply

Anyone who thinks this film is part of the giallo tradition of Italian horror / thrillers is an idiot.

And trumpting your "proof" as coming from from wikipedia is like using toilet grafitti as the basis for your life philosophy.

reply

Besides the graphic violence, COTLD is not a giallo. There is no suspenseful whodunit plot, a key thematic of every giallo film. Instead of quoting your evidence from the Wikipedia definition of giallo, watch some Mario Bava films.

I love City of the Living Dead! I've got the Anchor Bay DVD, the Arrow Video 2-DVD set and the Blue Underground Blu-ray.It's my favourite Fulci horror flick. It has a great score by Fabio Frizzi, has a really creepy atmosphere to it, and has buckets of blood & gore.If you're a fan of Italian horror, what's not to love about it?

reply

i just love this movie sure the ending is weird so what? just enyoy the movie

reply

I saw this for the first time tonight and really enjoyed it. I thought it had some great scares and the surreal atmosphere makes up for a few of its short comings.
