He is so good as the father trying to hold his family together. The tragic loss of his son Buck has blown the family apart. His wife Beth, played by Mary Tyler Moore is cold towards the surviving Conrad. The heart breaking conversation between Beth and Calvin at the end is painful to watch.

Rest in Peace Donald Sutherland.

Beautiful and understated performance by Sutherland. A true master.

While Calvin may have been a little blindsided by Beth’s nature and a tragedy exposed all her fissures, what a blessing for any male to have a father like Calvin.
