Was the Shadmock....

...actually an undead creature or was it some sort of pseudo-undead?

I thought he was a Ghoul or variation of one at least.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

I think the Shadmock is supposed to be some type of hybrid being rather than an undead. Although he is entirely in human form there is something of birdlife about him. He certainly seems more in sympathy with birds than with humans.

Next time you watch this film, pay close attention to Vincent Price's description of the "monster breeding chart". I can't recall the whole thing, but Shadmocks are basically the extremely watered-down result of a vampire and werewolf having offspring, and those offspring having kids with other monsters, humans, etc. I think it takes several generations to make a Shadmock. They're not one of the undead - if memory serves, it's been a long time since I read the book.
