...they made more horror films like this...these days?
..i love these old Portmanteau/collective horror / ghost stories..
like "Vault of Horror", "Asylum" ...and "Dr Terrors House of Horror"...
watched the monster club again last night..for firs time in maybe 20 years or more and it was a real delight..excluding perhaps the early 80s post punk pop songs which age the film a little..it was as highly enjoyable as I remembered it as a kid...
the 3 stories are really well told..and the Shadmoc tale..is as genuinely sad and touching...as I remember...
the vampire story also brings a few chuckles..and the humghoul story although probably the weakist in my mind.. is still a bit creepy..
of course the added cast of true horror legends as well as other great younger actors of that time..help add some gravitas to the film..

seems in recent years with the flurry of mostly inferior remakes "Hills have Eyes", Halloween, Nightmare on Elm street, last house on the left... the wolfman...etc..its really indicating a lack of ideas and originality on scripwriters that they have to rehash old classics.. would be really refreshing to have some more of these short story compilations again..like the old Amicus ones...does anyone know if they made any more of these types of films in recent years..?
the last i recall were the 80s and creepshow, twilight zone the movie and Cats Eyes (not that great the last one)...i think the horror film genre is long overdue a return to these classic gothic short stories..
i know I would see them :-)

Hear, hear! I'd like to see more films like this 'period.'

This little treasure was made back in the 'no frills' days. CGI was only a myth, and not every scene had to be laced with an overbearing musical score, back to back action sequences, and big name Hollywood celebrities with inflated lips, and pulled back brows.

These were the kinder, gentler days, where the actual 'story' was the focal point.

More science, less fiction.

Amen to that!

Although..."Trick'r Treat" was an ok recent horror anthology (2007...I was hoping it'd bring the genre back to life :-\)and I've heard "Hood of Horror" is an urban take on it (never seen it so I can't vouch for the quality of it though...)

Absolutely. I do think anthology horror films are starting to make a comeback with films like Trick 'r Treat, V/H/S, and V/H/S 2 which you'll never hear a complaint from me about. Anthology horror films are some of my favorite ones.

what about Trick R Treat? that movie is like a modern version of Creepshow, it is amazing.

I guess you could say VHS is also kind of like these movies, doesn't have the charm that Monster Club had but they at least tried to have different stories together like this

right....

"Cat's Eye" might've been better if the studio hadn't cut the prologue which explained what was going on. It probably would have helped the final story, anyway.

Everyone keeps mentioning "Trick R Treat," and the funny thing about that film is the studio scrapped the planned theatrical release and shelved it for a while - they were worried that the film wouldn't do well and that the kids-in-peril aspect would cause controversy. Ironically, when the film was finally issued on DVD, it became a monstrous mainstream cult hit. Goes to prove that the studio suits are clueless.

Back on topic, "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" and "Grim Prairie Tales" haven't been mentioned yet nor has the completely over-the-top recent horror-comedy "Chillerama." I'm sure I could cite dozens more which have been made in the years since "Monster Club" if I pondered it for a while.

Was the term Shadmock just invented for this film?

No. The Shadmok first appears in R. Chetwynd Hayes paperback book 'The Monster Club' in 1976. This monster is a darker being originally who is watered down for the movie.
