Why is it called The Mirror Crack'd instead of The Mirror Cracked?

Miss Marple quotes from the poem, The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, which includes the line

the mirror crack'd from side to side

. This is the way it is spelled in the poem.

Strangely enough I have seen this spelling of the word 'cracked' get used. Someone queried this spelling with me when they received an email spelling the word this way. I just told them that I only knew this story that used the word spelt this way. Perhaps it's an Old English version of the word.
