What does this have to do with jazz?
Jazz, the musical form, appears to have nothing to do with this movie. Why is it called The Jazz Singer?

shareIt has nothing to do with Jazz. Its supposed to be a remake of the 1927 version with Al Jolson. He did sing Jazz in that version. (Well, what was considered Jazz at the time.)
shareUnless the movie a was documentary of some sort, or a "Live, In Performance" show, I don't think that the title "The Pop Singer" with Neil Diamond would have drawn much attention from anyone but his fans - I'm one of them - while sheer curiosity would draw more folks to see a "remake" of "The Jazz Singer" starring him...
Living near WDUQ/Jazz (90.5 FM, Pittsburgh), I've heard a lot of cross-over Jazz/Pop music on radio and have heard even more during the years I've strayed from it. That's what brought me back to DUQ. Define your Jazz?
"England's Carol" (MJQ&O)..."

It's a remake (the second remake, actually) of the 1927 original with Al Jolson. IIRC, there's a brief scene of someone reading a review that COMPARES Jess Robin's vocal qualities to those of a jazz singer. Obviously that bit was thrown into the script just to provide an excuse for the title.
BTW, Bob Fosse's All That Jazz has nothing to do with jazz either!
All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?
