i'm thinking about buying this movie..

exactly how good is it?

Very good. Just watched it recently and remember it making the rounds on HBO when it first came out. It is quite scary and one of the best of the early 80's slasher films. This is how you make a scary movie unlike many of the horror movies made in the last 15 years. Look for Tom Hanks in his feature film debut.

Watching it on TCM right this very moment, and it's...not too bad! Some nice direction, and the acting's above average. No classic, but it's better than a lot of more famous horror movies. And Tom Hanks' first film is worth a look in itself!
