so i asked my dad about stuff in the movie, and...

the scene in the mourge was at seaview hospital which was a tuberculousis hospital in the 1920's. it was genuinely creepy, according to my father who worked on the movie.

to get the morgue room ready, they had to get many bottles of tuberculosis lung samples out of the room. since there were so many deaths, there were actual underground tunnels connecting all of the wards to the mourge, and he's pretty sure another scene was actually shot in the tunnels.

the amusment park scene was taped at south beach amusement park, which actually closed recently. an interesting tidbit is that they needed to re-shoot a scene there, and they used one of the cameraman's 7 year old son. they wanted him in a close-up with cotton candy, but since there wasn't any cotton candy, they put pink fiberglass insulation in a big paper cone. his father was horrified.

at the time, tom hanks was really impressed with the actors, because he was still a nobody. my dad remembers driving to the staten island ferry and overhearing him talk to some of the leads about pointers for auditions and such. the lead male apparently had had some modeling job on an army recruitment poster, and tom hanks was impressed with the man's "success".

if there's anything else you guys would like to know, message me on here!

cool information, thanks

I still haven't even opened my DVD yet (I'm up to my eyeballs in school work so I don't have time) but I vaguely recall watching it on tv about 6 years ago. I love slasher films though. Were there any scenes that were cut out of the final film, or script changes made before they were filmed?

oh yeah what was Dana Barron like on/off the set? I remember she was quite good looking in the movie. Was your dad one of the producers? thanks

Excellent post. Thanks. I have to agree, the underground tunnels were scary. They would have done better to center more of the scarey action around the tunnels. Interesting movie.

Was the theater in the opening scene a real theater? And if so where is or was it? thanks

reply

I'm not sure where it was, but its closed down. There are only 3 theaters left. All the rest closed down.

From mboccippio, in the thread "filming locations on Staten Island"

The interior of the theater is the old St. George Theater by the Staten Island Ferry, which showed movies up to the late 1970's (saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre there as an underage teen). The exterior shots are of the old Fox theater, now known as the United Artists theater, Hylan Plaza in New Dorp.

The St. George is still open, although it is now a theater for live performances rather than movies.

It's been a while since I've seen the film but I recall the actual killing scene was inside the Lane Theater. There's a St George Theater scene where one of the women is walking down a staircase and yes the exterior was the Fox Theater.
