Ehh as long as you have at least moved on from VHS I think you will be okay!

Is this not one of the best songs ever? I get chills whenever I'm watching this movie and hear it.

"What are you thinking about?"
"Annie."
"What about Annie?"
"Nothing...just Annie."

We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

It's an amazing song, fitting perfectly at the intersection of folk and disco. They do not make songs like that anymore, and they barely did back then. It's probably second to "At Seventeen" in my list of favorite Janis Ian songs, but it's a very close second. It's even better than "Society's Child." I love that woman.

I just bought the Japanese version of "Night Rains" for "Fly Too High" and also her VERY rare song "You Are Love" which is a bonus song.

reply

I need to seek out "You Are Love." I have "Fly Too High" on the "Foxes" soundtrack on vinyl plus on two CD compilations: "The Essential Janis Ian" and "At Seventeen" (<--- confusing title for a compilation, but I guess CBS took the familiar route).

Janis Ian has made some interesting and evocative music over the years, but her career has largely slipped through the cracks with music fans, and she never seemed to have much support from the industry. I suspect the dour nature of her most familiar songs have cast a shadow over her career, which is very unfortunate.

"You are Love" is a beautiful song. I bought the 2CD/DVD of The Best of Janis Ian (which is the same as The Essential) and on the DVD she sings it at a Japanese concert and I was immediately taken with it. I didn't realize how rare it is but sought it out.

She's had an interesting career but full of stops and starts.

reply

Thanks for the details. I shall seek out "The Best of Janis Ian" with the DVD.

Janis has made interesting and challenging music, but I suspect having a hit with "At Seventeen" was both a blessing and a curse. It seems she's often been in the shadow of other singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Carole King, whose works were generally more accessible.
