When that couple picks up Annie at the end, what the hell is up with them? The wife says her name is Bert. Then they comment on that is a strange name. They obviously had something in mind for Annie. The wife wasn't a guy was it? Was that what the Bert comment was about? Predators are not usally normal male and female couples?

Well, first up , they were "Swingers"...which was sort of "in fashion" in the '70s. Married couples used to pick up other married couples and "wife swap"...or indulge in Orgy-like sex games.
my guess, is "Bert" and her husband were picking up Annie for a threesome.
they were also very very drunk....which is why they were so bold and strange acting.
"Bert" is probably just a nickname for a female name (Like, maybe "Beatrice") or "Bernadette"). I am a woman but some close friends call me "Danny", for example.

Yep...the couple were definitely wasted-they've obviously been drinking heavily.
And the husband certainly didn't CARE how drunk he was behind the wheel. No sooner did Annie get into the front seat when he was all over her telling her to "relax and have a good time".
And that moment, she knew it was a MISTAKE to have gotten into the car,but...unfortunately it was too late, they ran smack into the big rig truck in front of them on the freeway.
It seemed like she might survive-but once she spit up blood into in her oxygen mask-that was it!

Without question, the couple that picked up Annie were Swingers. It was popular but still underground in the late 70's early 80's.
The couple, saw her as an easy mark and likely felt she would be game as she had the appearance of a stoner.
There is also the morality play element here, with a big nod to the danger of Hitchhicking. There were several cases of women being picked up while Hitchiking and found dead in the late 70's.
The sad thing was that Annie apparently recognized the danger before the crash, but it was too late. Drugs killed her, just not directly.

There was Gerald and Charlene Gallego, who killed runaways and prostitutes around Sacramento, Nevada and Oregon from 1978-1980, and Carol Bundy and Doug Clark, the Sunset Strip Killers, who operated in Hollywood and Burbank in summer, 1980. The couple in the movie reminded me very much of these killer teams, especially Gerald and Charlene Gallego.
However the couple in the movie could not have been based on either serial killer couple, as the Gallegos were not caught until November 1980, Bundy and Clark did not even start their killing until June 1980, and the movie came out in March 1980.
