I love the movie, a lot of it rang true for me...but the one thing I had a "problem" with was that Madge's family was fine with her marrying that 30 year old man. The "Keg For A Party" scene shows that her mom is really uptight about teens trying to act grown up (They drink SCOTCH!) and being sexual and being so happy that Madge is a virgin. You'd think she woulda dropped dead to find out her daughter was bangin the old man down the road!

A lot of this movie didn't make any sense to me, either. In, real-life, I couldn't even imagine Madge being friends with this gang: the cool straight-as-an-arrow popular girl, the druggie pretty girl... Madge seems more like the type that would be taking the gay guy to her prom. Sort of the lonely social outcast. Also, they never even said how she met, Jay.

I've watched it a million times and I've always assumed he was a neigbor.The scene where she's all dressed up in a dress, big hat and high heels and she's having trouble walking up the hill in heels? I have always assumed he lived up the hill from her. (So, okay, she wasnt bangin the old man down the road..she was bangin the old man up the hill! And not even Dennis Quaid! RANDY Quaid! Ewwww! )

I bought the Madge charactor cuz me and my high school friends were "Party Girls" and we had this one friend we called "The Mother Hen" who was the straight-laced one. She was a Good Girl Who Wanted To Be Bad. not to be mean but she was very overweight and not very pretty. It sorta made you think if she had the looks she WOULDA been more of a wild woman. I feel the same way about Madge.

Holy Crap, mamamia, we're so much alike it's creepy. I was in the party girls group in high and we also had a mother hen in our crowd. I think all party girls from our time had one.

LOL! but not true....As I believe myself and my friend may have been the most 'obvious' in our 1977 high school. I had no real horrible experiences, but he was beaten up once by thugs under the bleachers (from what he told me). Real nice, huh? I'm a transsexual and he was gay (he died back in 1992!)

The only reason I saw this movie so many times is because of Cherie Currie as we were both fans of "The Runaways."

I'm so sorry you lost your school chum. It must have been hard on you.

I never really had any problems in High School either, my senior year a classmate referred to me as GayGuy once. Guess I wasn't straight acting as I thought. All irrelevant now. :)

As for Foxes, I saw it my senior year, it made me feel like I was missing out. I wanted to move to LA.

I don't think Madge's family did accept her seeing Jay at all. Even when Madge was grounded for her behavior at her "party" she snuck out to see jay. When Jay saw her, he made the comment that he kept trying to contact Madge--and Madge said her family has a problem with him "You know---the age thing"

Jay was correct in saying that his grandmother married young (He sounded like he was from the South--and it was done in those days and more in the West Virginia ---mountains etc. But Yep! if she was my daughter---I WOULD BE VERY concerned at this romance!

I always thought that they finally accepted Jay in the family (at the end at the wedding) because he possibly knocked Madge up and it was a shot gun wedding scenerio. Since Madge lived in a romantic dream world, I don't think she would have thought of taking precautions with pregnancy.

At the end Jeanie's mom says something like, "you're 18, you're going to college". I assume Madge was 18 as well so all her family could do was accept it or lose her forever.

Back in the 80's..it was completely "normal" to have a straight-laced friend. I miss those days. Now, in the newer generation - you rarely see it.

I guess I'll cut my losses, and turn my tricks at the magic show..

I may be wrong but I thought there was an implication that time had passed and the girls had all graduated form high school at the time of the wedding. Perhaps the girl was 18 at the time of the marriage.

Yes, you are correct. Immediately after the wedding, Sally Kellerman mentions to Jodie Foster that she is going to be leaving for college. So, time HAS passed...all the girls are graduated from high school, and are at least 18 years old. So, to the original OP....the girl was NOT 16 at the time of the marriage. But, if a 30 year old man did wed a 16 year old girl in the U.S. he would be in trouble with the law. The marriage wouldn't be valid. But, if the girl's parents gave legal consent, the marriage would be possible and would not be against the law.

Well said. It was a problem with the narrative thread from Annie's death to the wedding scene.

I ran with a pack that fluctuated from 5 to 10 girls, who had varying degrees of drug tolerance. And, there was at least one "light weight, goodie two shoes" in the bunch. I remember her well, good old, Cindy--a nervous catholic approval seeker. We packed her bong bowl every time to watch her cough up a storm. Aah, the good old days.

I also was under the impression that she was pregnant at the time of the wedding.

I don't believe things are quite so different regarding marriages, maybe ages to drink liquor, smoke cigarettes or drive a car... AND now same sex. However I believe legal marriaging ages are pretty much on the whole exactly the same as 1980 because these laws are governed by the individual state, province or country of statute. Also with Capialism probably Western culture's motivational factor since legal contracts could not really be imposed on said individuals under the age of 18. Funny thing there wasn't as many divorces either. So I'll agree with poster below followed by some examples:

One instance is the town of Elkton, Maryland which has it's lowest legal age for marriage at the cusp of 16 with parental consent and no regard for any such upper age limitation imposed on the other party. This is as true Today as it was back in 1980. The state of Utah, USA also had/has a substantially low marriage age requirement mostly attributed to the inhabitants that live there (Mormons). AND it's also a well known fact that "Virgin" Mary of the Biblical stories was substantially younger than 16 and that Joseph was a substantially older man. AND I'm also pretty sure those early Native Americans had differing ideologies on these unions within their culture. Some Chiefs were known to have very young wives,... Yes, I meant for this to be pluralized. This behavior is more of a Western culture practice than anything historical or presumably unnatural.

Hun, go look up Courtney Stodden. I believe she is 17 and recently married a 51 year old man with her parents consent. These things happen.

The guy was wealthy, so why wouldn't the parents want her to marry him? The alternative is that she has sex with two dozen other guys in college, an abortion or two, and ends up married to some loser who teaches high school.

I marvel at the same thing in "Manhattan", where Woody Allen's character is like 42 and "dating" a 17 year old. Taking her to Elaine's and letting her sleep over. And no one bats an eyelash.

The age of marriage in the United States varies by state, but is generally 18. Most states, however, allow minors below 18 to marry with parental and/or judicial consent. Generally they have to be at least 16 but sometimes lower.

I remember a guy about that age, a car salesman, who did marry a 16 year old girl and she was a lot like the girl in this film. They lasted about a year.
