I don't find disfigurements and deformities scary or disgusting at all
If anything, it's a combination of fascination, for the possibilities around complex DNA and birth defects, and pity, for the poor person inflicted with them.
I don't recall how I reacted when I first saw Joseph Merrick's picture, but I'm not fazed at all, except how his deformities could've occurred and how disadvantaged he must've been in life.
