its so easy to forget it was made in 1980

God dam, the whole time i was watching i had to remind myself it was made in 1980 and it was Lynch - so weird - this is the last lynch movie i have seen, having seen all his other films and him being my favorite director - it was so strange watching this and im kind of glad i watched it so delayed as i did - so different from his other films - although i havent seen Dune and i dont really think i ever will... heh. anyway so great - john hurt was amazing - really good

i used to watch this when i was very young, around 10 years old so i didnt know who anthony hopkins was. i always assumed it was made in the 50's! even watching it last night and knowing it must be more recent its still looks more old thatn some old movies, if that makes sense! amazing stuff

Very true. I saw it screened at a cinema this evening, and the film feels like it's coming straight from somewhere between the b&w films of the 50s, and the b&w photographs from the period that the story is set in. Absolutely superbly done by the whole cinematography and design team.
