Perfect movie for a remake

This is a great premise. It has a very dark opening, and could be an amazing coming of age/adventure film. It could use a little bigger budget to escape the low budget feel it has, but this could be amazing.

nice idea - and whom would you cast for the main characters? Especially who would be the "Shawn Daley" of today?

I was thinking it could be a male or female, it really doesn't matter. It is a huge role for a child, so strong acting is a must. I could see Milly booby brown, but she needs to do it while she still looks young. And someone like viggo mortensen as the mentor.
