HBO Children of the 80s, HELP!!!

Okay, I've been trying to find out the names of a lot of the movies I watched on HBO back between approximately 1981-1987.

I have this one movie in my mind, and when I try to look it up, I keep coming back to THE EARTHLING, and that's because of people dieing in terrible camper accidents.

Here's the description of the movie (mine) I'm trying to find, so please tell me if it's this movie or not [please don't stop after the first sentence or two, because you will scream THE EARTHLING] :

"It involves a family that dies by going off a cliff in a camper, and a boy is left to fend for himself. As I said, I do NOT believe this movie to be THE EARTHLING with Ricky Schroder. There is a minor story-arc where the boy carries around one of those puzzles with the two horseshoes chained together (sort of like handcuffs) with a steel ring in between, and (I think) some bearded man tells the boy that the boy will become a "true warrior" or a "true man" or something if the boy can get the steel ring out from those two horseshoes. In the very end, the boy is laying down looking down over the cliff and (I think) a bad guy is grabbing and trying to keep from falling, and he grabs the horseshoe thing and he eventually falls off the cliff and the boy is left staring at the ring because it came off."

I hope I'm not combining two movies here. I mean, how many movies from the 80s had traumatic parents-dieing-in-campers scenes? Maybe that's why our generation is the way it is.

I may be just taking that horrible memory of that scene and inserting it into another film.

Please help. I'd appreciate it.
