What did Lorretta expect? (wedding night)

She seemed really excited about getting married, and wanted to. She enjoyed kissing and making out with Doo.

I know there's no sex education then, but I'm sure she knew how it works. She probably saw farm animals doing it and stuff.

So if she wasn't ready for sex...why did she get married? Doo didn't seem like the patient type at all, and he said he chased wild women so she knew he wasn't a virgin.

I'm not blaming her on the rape or saying it was her fault. I just don't know what she was thinking. Her family was against it (it broke her father's heart), she didn't know how to cook or run a household, she wasn't ready for sex...but she was super excited about getting married to him.

Lorretta's bio shows her born Apr. '32 and married Jan. '48. Thus she was 15, not 13 or 14 when married.

There's a big difference between knowing about sex and actually experiencing it. Re/"Gone With the Wind" (book), when Scarlett impulsively married Charles Hamilton at age 16. Something about the dream-like quality of getting married vanishing at the sight of Charles emerging from her dressing room in his nightshirt. (He spent their wedding night in an armchair.)

Same thing w/Loretta. The idea of marrying Doo was exciting and wonderful, but once they were in a motel room about to Do It, she wanted out!

Some girls are just more worldly than others. My gf in high school was 14, I was 16 at the time and she knew everything about sex. Now days, some girls are doing it by the time they're 11 or 12.

However, I have this feeling that Loretta honestly didn't know what was going to happen on her wedding night. She was only expecting to be held but instead she got this big bulging man on top of her sweat'in like a pig.

I think she might reasonably have expected some kissing and making out before he got on top of her and shoved it in. Foreplay is not an unrealistic expectation in general, even for experienced women. For a scared virgin who needs help relaxing enough to allow first entry, it's pretty near essential.

I've read the book Coal Miner's Daughter, and in it, Loretta has said that her Mother never discussed "the facts of life" with her. Therefore, she had no idea what was in store for her on her wedding night.

And back in those days, most 13 year olds were not sexually mature, much less capable of reproducing

13 or 15, it's irrelevant as far as what the OP's point was. So she liked kissing this guy and thought being married would be great--a kid that age in that day and age can hardly know what it's like to do anything more than exactly that and the dude wasn't even gentle or nice about it. How anyone can expect her to have had a mature, adult understanding, a full understanding, of what things are like beyond kissing and "playing house" is ridiculous.

You're a rude, thickheaded ignorant. Nobody is asking her to have a COMPLETE understanding of sex. Read the first post again and you'll see the user is just doubtful she had NO IDEA at all what married couples do o their first night together.

By drawing out the scene of her discomfort and unease, Hollywood gets to demonstrate to the audience that the young teen was not a sexually experienced piece of white trash.

I think when you live in poverty all of your life, you'll do just about anything to make your life better. Not saying that anyone in her shoes should go that route, but Doolittle Lynn was the best thing that ever happened to Loretta.

I think Doolittle should have been a bit more caring about her first time and ease into it. Her father said "Don't you never hit her and don't you never take her far away from us. Well he did both. What her old man should have said "Take it easy with my daughter on the wedding night."

Better question: Why did Doo marry HER? He was a grown man and expected her to be experienced at sex, cooking, and cleaning house. That's what he got for marrying a teenager.
