Why do l LOVE this movie????

Is it because it has more cheese than a Big Mac? Maybe it's because of some of the one liners like "When it comes to eating, all mothers are jewish." that I like. The badly written songs? Or because it belongs to that era of films, which are like time capsules of tight clothes and big hair. I suppose there are numerous reasons why, but mainly I like it because the film's so bad it's good. Quite a few musicals came out around 1980 and flopped badly; Xanadou is one that springs to mind, but at least this one can stand up to a few more viewings...after about 3 glasses of wine, and a belly-full of food.

This movie isn't ven bad enough for the "so bad it's good" genre...it's just bad. I actually got a chance to see this film again recently and this one doesn't even rate as good cheese...it's just an embarassment to all involved, from director Nancy Walker to the all-star cast. A whole lot of money was poured into this movie and it just wasn't worth it.

I find myself wondering the same thing -- WHY do I love it so? I think it's because it perfectly documents the last days of disco in all their tragic glory. (Or is it glorious tragedy?) The NYC locations are also nice to see.

In a sense, this film documents a mindset, an era, a population and a city that would soon turn tragically different and would never be the same again. Probably more accurately, this film strikes me as pure fantasy, so so much for "documenting" anything.

It's junk food for the eyes and the ears, and sometimes I just have to escape to it when reality proves too difficult -- just like sometimes I just have to eat a bag of marshallows even though I know I'll regret it later.

I remember seeing this at the Ziegfeld Theater here in New York. It opened in 70mm.
