Anybody got the DVD?

If so, what's it like? Good film transfer? Any extras?

reply

The transfer is actually pretty good(or at least as good as
could be expected). They had to realize that they were not
going to get Shrek-like sales, so they released a pretty
barebones edition. The extras are limited to a trailer and
a written history of the group. It's actually a good dvd to
put on when you are trying to clear out the last remaining
party guests. Most people can't make it past the
rollerskating Steve Guttenberg during the opening credits.

reply

It's also letterboxed and contains the infamous shower scene (during the YMCA number) which was cut from some videos because there's glimpses of full frontal male nudity.

reply

My god it's good I got the DVD and I love it.
It's so funny and the music is good as well

I'm not sure what time zone you are in so I can't give you a count down but good luck with your quest. I am curious though, what emergency situation can you be in that requires a dvd of "Can't Stop The Music"?

Hope you find it.

I do! I do! I've had it since it was released. Watched it again last night as an antidote to the Christmas glut. Ah, memories...

Decent transfer, but no subtitles or audio commentary. The lack of audio commentary is excusable given that the director (Nancy Walker), producer (Allan Carr), the guy the film is pretty much about (Jacques Morali), and at least one Village Person are all deceased. But much of the cast is still alive and kicking: I do have to wonder what Steve Guttenberg, Bruce Jenner, Valerie Perrine, Marilyn Sokol, June Havoc, Barbara Rush, Tammy Grimes, Paul Sand and the surviving Village People might say today about this film.

The history of the film in the Special Features section is all text, but very interesting.

The film is an outright embarrassment for all concerned. Nancy Walker had no feature film directing experience and it shows. The acting is wildly over the top (Steve Guttenberg appears to be acting in a different movie all together), but the production numbers are fun, and the "eighties" fashions are ridiculous.

The other thing that is extremely noticable about the film is that the studio made a conscious effort to try and pass the Village People members off as straight. Check out construction worker David Hodo doing "I Love You To Death" with a bunch of scantilly clad ladies. And the finale is in front of a decidely "mixed" audience with cheering females and hetero couples in the front row.

...Well Mike, I imagine Steve Guttenberg, for one, is still hoping for a sequel, considering he hasn't been seen since his Police Academy glory days.

Also, I watched a documentary about the group, and, (as far as I recall) it revealed that all, bar one, of the group were HETEROSEXUALS!...Yes, I know, I was disgusted too.

I've not seen this film, but any film which includes 'Can't Stop The Music' on the soundtrack MUST be great! Here it is:http://www.toa-kaikan.com/disco_music/CantStopTheMusic.ram

Everybody now :

Everyone you meet, the children in the street, are swayin' to the rhythm there's somethin' moving in them.
There's no place to hide, so, why even try? Can't you hear it comin' your way? It's here to stay.
Music in our walk, music when we talk. It's really somethin' magic, to lose it would be tragic.
Can't you feel the sound, movin' through the ground? Music makes the world go around.

You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Take the cold from snow, tell the trees "don't grow", tell the wind "don't blow", 'cause it's easier. No!
You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Take the spark from love, make the rain fall up, 'cause that's easier to do.

Movin' with the wind, since the world began, the beat is gonna getcha, beat is gonna getcha.
Music for the blues, for your dancin' shoes, there's music in the way that we kiss, you can't resist.
Movin' through the trees, buzzin' with the bees, the sound is gettin' louder, sound is gettin' louder.
Music when we play, when we kneel to pray, there's music in the sound of the wind.

You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Take the heat from flame, try not feeling pain, though you try in vain, it's much easier. No!
You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Change the master plan, take the hope from man, 'cause that's easier to do.

On the radio, on every TV show, for each and every reason, each and every season.
Music when we love, for the moon above, music for the show of life that never ends.
Music on a plane, music on a train, sailin' on the ocean, music in the motion.
Music in your car, at your local bar, there's music when you look at a star.

You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Keep two lovers apart, mend a broken heart, catch a fallin' star, that's much easier. No!
You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.
Tell the sun "don't shine", stop old father time, 'cause that's easier to do.

I have to point out that if you recall hearing (in a documentary or elsewhere) that all but 1 member of VP were heteros, you have been misinformed. David Hodo (construction worker), Randy Jones (cowboy), Felipe Rose (Indian), and Glenn Hughes (leatherman) were most DEFINITELY gay. As for Alex Briley (G.I.) and Ray Simpson (cop), I'm not sure but one of them was once married to Phylicia Rashad..

I have the DVD and it's awesome! I'm a child of the 70's and I went to see this movie at least 20 times in the theaters. I kid you not. I loved it and still love it. My grandaughter watches it too. She's five and she loves it!

reply

That's funny you mention your 5 year old granddaughter loves the movie! I am a child of the 80s and my mom had a couple of Village People records. She played them when I was about 5 years old, and I enjoyed them! (The records must have been released about 4-8 years before that time.) So we have established that the Village People appeal to 5 year old girls and gay men. How interesting!

reply

Did anybody notice the almost nude photos of a couple of the Village People on the DVD? There was a photo stills album. The pictures sort of looked like baseball cards. A couple of them were actual stills from the movie, but most were Village People photos. I think one of them was of the Leatherman wearing maybe his leather hat, boots, and gloves. THAT'S IT! Thankfully he was covering himself up. I shuffled past those pictures because I was NOT interested, heh!
