should have been made/released a year earlier

Dont get me wrong,,I liked the film,,a time capsule on a group of the past that made a brief, yet memorable mark on music history,,,but,,,music is fickle and by 1980 when the film was released, the People were becoming ancient history already,,,again not their fault. Disco was still big in 1979 but all but dead by the end of the year. Their last big hit "In the Navy" came in the spring of 1979.

This movie was BAD (in a great way)
it would have been bad no matter when it was released :)
Even if it was released in 1978 or 1979 it wouldnt have made a difference

Exactly. Its quality would not have been substantially different (I myself have not seen it lo, these three decades since it was on HBO regularly) but I recall it as goofy fun, which is fine -- that's all it ever aimed to be.

If released in 1978 or 1979, it probably would have done decently at the box office.

To me, the true sign of Disco being totally dead was when one of the troops in Stripes was wearing a t-shirt that said "Death Before Disco".

And, on that note -- RIP, Harold Ramis.

It would've performed better at the box office. But it would still be considered a bad movie.
