Australians - why does Channel 9 play this movie every New Year's Eve?

For the past four years at least, I've noticed that Channel nine always puts this movie on on New Year's Eve - usually just before midnight or right after the Harbour Bridge fireworks. Why is that? What is it about this movie that brings in a new year? For the past couple of years I've literally welcomed in the new year completely baffled by this. I know they probably own the rights to airing it but I just don't get why they always choose to air it on New Year's Eve. It's playing again tonight at 11:30. Anyone care to solve the mystery?

Maybe its the sort of movie you can only watch when you're drunk.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN AND IT'S ON WHY

That's the thing about life...nobody gets out alive.

No idea why, it is a fun film though so maybe it just fits in with a celebration.

Non related useless trivia, back in the 80's and 90's Channel 9 would play a lot of music videos during it's NY countdown show, one song that featured every year was 1999 by Prince, that was of course until 1999 when they didn't play it at all!

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

Watched it again for New Years Eve on TV seeing out 2016 ushering in 2017.
What a goofy tradition, but was good fun.
