Caligula-Most Evil Man in History?

I watched a documentary called 'Most Evil Men In History'

and what do you know, i featured Caligula.

now, we all know from studying Caligula's life he was f#ked up.

but one of the most evil men in history?

reply

personally, i don't think he was evil,

just screwed in the head.

but again, it was ancient Rome, half the emporors were psychos

Nero, Tiberius etc.

I don't think Caligula was the most evil man ever. In fact, the movie is sorta over-the-top in its depiction of Caligula, despite McDowell's brilliant performance (his performance is #4 on my top 10 most amazing performances ever list). After reading up about the real Caligula, I think cdkan makes a good point that he was just f--ked in the head, and not the most evil person. He did some pretty badass things in his lifetime though.

Well when a person has all this depravity and evil surrounding them you can't expect Mother Teresa can you.

That's actually making excuses you know. I for example had a bit hard childhood and walk around beating random people and humiliating children. I grow up to become a person who is everything about opposite to what the people who were bad to me were.
He was just immoral and inhumane and didn't make excuses that I know of to do what he did. He did what he want because he could.

And let's not forget that those who wrote about Caligula weren't exactly his supporters or likely very friendly towards him. Take the incident where he alledgedly made his horse a senator. Is this evidence of his insanity or was he making horses asses of the senate?

I'd love to see a movie that explores this event not as the actions of a lunatic but as an act carried out as a calculated insult.

"And let's not forget that those who wrote about Caligula weren't exactly his supporters"

Mostly Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius, who despised the Imperial system and made ALL the emperors look like fools, madmen, and tyrants.

"Take the incident where he alledgedly made his horse a senator"

Exactly. He merely THREATENED to do this.Incitatus NEVER graced the senate floor. And his reason WAS to show the senators that ANYONE or any HORSE could be made into a senator at his whim.

reply

Well since politicians tend to be horses' asses..

reply

... Or the other half of them liked to have their predecessors' history being biased, to put themselves in a better light and to discredit their deceased enemies. All of these to win the love of the people so that it didn't overthrow them too early. It's called propaganda and I guess it should not surprise any intelligent person.

reply

Yeah, right.

Ah yes, every evil man had mommie issues.

Take a look at Ed Gein.

Well true, he had probably had extreme paranoia (as shown in the film) sexual issues (the whole thing with his sister and beyond) and i'm pretty sure if you add absolute power to the recipe them you have a recipe for nutjob.

Yes, but I'm talking about movie Caligula, real Caligula would probably look at movie Caligula and go "What the f#k are you doing"

Like M.J.'s paedophilia? Oh you just need to be a Roman emperor/disgustingly wealthy popstar and cut the heads of/bribe the victim's family and noone ever proves you guilty.

I can think of dozens far worse, without even breaking a sweat. In modern times alone, there must be a dozen or more that make Caligula look like a saint.

We keep mentioning the same people, Stalin, Hitler etc.

There are plenty of other evil people

Rasputin, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Osama Bin Laden, Sadam Hussein, Fidel Castro etc.

Don't shake your head like that. The woman wants to burn books and ban sex-ed in schools. She'd probably nuke Russia and destroy the world at the first opportunity. She's a modern "Caligula" if ever there was one

I wouldn't even say he is the most evil Roman Emperor in history; that award probably goes to Heliogabalus. Caligula was mostly insane.

I liked the way he was portrayed in the I, Claudius series.

reply

Elagabalus wasn't evil by any stretch of the imagination. He was just a transsexual. No more, no less.

I think Hitler was more evil.

reply

I think you have to separate the fact there is a difference between power hungry evil and actual evil
there are 2 types of evil people those who killed and have killed with there own hands and those who order and sign documents to have people killed.

reply

The Emperor of Japan was more evil. He started the WWII.
