some of the most beautiful cinematagrophy ever filmed

Did any1 else think that some of the underwater shots and particularly all the shots of the parents bonding with the baby was extremely original and breath-taking?

reply

Yes the underwater scenes were fantastic. I think Sony did a fabulous job with the transfer to Blu-Ray. I have a 92 inch screen and the colors and vegetation of the island look amazing in high-def as does Brooke of course :)

There's a scene at the start of the film when they're sitting on the beach talking. You can see the ocean in the background over Atkins' shoulder. The turqoise color is spectacular.

Nestor Almendros(DP) was a great visual artist. :)

I don't get why the film was so bashed by the critics, I thought it was an amazing film. The scenery was spectacular and the story itself was beautiful-simple but still nonetheless a good one of innocence, survival, growing up, sexual awakening and love . You could say the film was a big inspiration for later big things that came after like 'the beach','castaway' or 'lost'.

I think a lot of critics and some people were taken aback by all the nudity back in 1980. The late Roger Ebert whom I usually agreed with hated this film. I think he even said it was the worse release he saw that year(LOL!).

It's one of those movies that usually has a love/hate reaction. Also some of the dialgoue is yes corny and Brooke Shields was no Kristy McNichol or Jodie Foster acting wise but that still doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the movie for me.

Despite everything the film did make a nice profit for Columbia and as time as gone on I think it's become an 80's classic especially for those of us who were teenagers back then.

It was always remain one of my personal favorites :)

This film was (rightfully) nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography but didn't win.

Yes. So many scenes are absolutely breathtaking and captivating. Simplistic and beautiful. One of my favorite films. (:

The cinematography is definitely on my Top 5 Best Ever.
In fact, it redeems the film. Yes, its a guilty pleasure from my youth.
But the film does drag a bit, plus the ending almost ruins it.

The soundtrack & cinematography save the day.

This is among my favorites. The cinematography was amazing. I absolute love the part where she is playing in the water in the dark and there is a halo of glowing around her. Just beautiful...

Oh yeah without a doubt, the music goes so perfect with a lot of these scenes, amazing color and the camera shots are just breath takingly beautiful! I cry when Richard goes to the other island years later and sees Paddys skeleton, then he learns that's part of his body, the music is just so sad, but it plays so perfectly, the way it sounds.
