shareThey died - If you watch the sequel, only Patty survived and I believe there is a scene with there is an ocean burial.
shareWow. Too bad. That one sailor at the end of the film said "they're asleep", so I always figured they were revived aboard ship on the journey home.
shareAt the end of this movie they are alive. At the beginning of the next movie they are dead. This is exactly what happened in the books, too. The author changed his mind between books.
I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler.

What a downer.
shareIt is a total downer and I would have liked it better if they discovered a stray berry on the floor of the boat, realized it was poison, and rushed to give them an antidote of some sort and they were revived. That would have been a happy ending and more satisfying for the viewer, in my opinion.

shareReally, there was a sequel? Mmm. But I really think in this movie, there were supposed to still be alive at the end. They thought what they ate was poisonous but wasn't.
shareIn actuality, those berries (rosary peas) are so poisonous that chewing and swallowing one single berry is very lethal. They are several times more lethal than ricin.
shareTHE most contrived ending EVER!
Stranded for over a decade and shortly after they decide to off theirselves a rescue arrives? LOL!
Why would they be dead? The old sailor told them the berries were poisonous, but it could just have meant they were inedible.
They were asleep.
Actually, he told them that if they ate them they would sleep and never wake. So, yes, he told them they were poisonous and potentially lethal. However, that does not necessarily mean he was right.
At the end of the movie, the sailor who gets first into the boat says that they are not dead, they are sleeping. The ending leaves us with the ambiguity of whether they can be revived.
