Call Me - Blondie
shareoh my, you ARE young, aren't you? This Blondie song is like one of the top selling hits of the 80's decade. She was kind of the Pink of her day.

::you do not leave this room until you tell your sister that you love her::
I was eleven years old when I saw it for the first time in the theater.

Blondie isn't a "she," it's a "they." Blondie was the name of the band, Debbie Harry was the lead singer. Kind of like Manfred Mann, Jethro Tull, and Steely Dan.
All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?
Actually its not a Blondie Song, she covered the song from Giorgio Moroder - Call Me. He made the whole soundtrack.

Shoot, I not only know Blondie's "Call Me" -- I know the OTHER "Call Me," the song written by Tony Hatch and recorded by Petula Clark and a bunch of other singers back in the Sixties!
All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?
Well, to be fair, the mix of Call Me that is included in the movie versus the original is quite different. I believe that the alternate version was the handiwork of Moroder.
The entire soundtrack is fantastic. One of the cuts is the sickest primal sounding minimal techno (used in the scene when Gere is tearing apart his car and apartment).
Idziub, I cannot recall every scene in the movie, but, the cut you are referring to...is this the very slow instrumental version of Call Me and is that on the soundtrack? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
shareNo, I'm familiar with the interlude you're referring to but this one is different. There is no melody to it. It is called The Apartment. It's the kind of music that some might refer to as "headache" music. :)
sharejzbass72. You seem so knowledgeable re: the MX and Moroder. I am hoping you can help me in my quest of many years now. Where can I find the slow instrumental version of call me used as background during certain scenes. There is no singing and its more hypnotic and slow. It’s not the dance instrumental version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
shareI'm not jzbass72 but I do have the soundtrack (vinyl and CD) from Polydor I believe and that track you describe is definitely on there. I'll listen to it tonight when I get home to see exactly what Moroder calls it.
shareThank you Idziub. I am eagerly awaiting your answer.
shareYes, the track you are interested in is on the soundtrack. It is called Night Drive (reprise). I can send you a copy in .aiff format if you like using yousendit or ichat if you have that.
shareMoroder was eating a lot of fried chicken by the time 1980 rolled around. Nobody noticed Harold Faltermeyer as the synth programmer/performer? I found the record at the thrift and gave it a listen. I like the track, "The apartment" But it sounds more like "Richard Gere in Outer Space!"
shareThere is also the track "Palm Springs drive" (aired when RG drives through the orange trees planted countryside toward Palm Springs). A lively instrumental track on the same theme as 'Call me', like is "Night drive". However, for the latter the film music track seems slightly different from the available record.
I had successively the musicassette O.S. from Polydor (was going along with the 1988 bought VHS, ha ha...) and the CD (intended to go with the DVD).
I noticed when using the DVD on 'original version' mode (I am french and got the DVD accordingly) that the music selection is different in the two versions:
- in the french dubbed movie, Cheryl Barnes's 'Love and passion' is heard when RG browses through his pantry to elaborate his dress of the evening.
And this is the track used & credited on both audio records I got.
- Smokey Robinson's famous track reprise is used for the original version in american. It is not featured nor credited on the O.S. records. Quite strange, maybe a copyright concern.
Other changes between versions:
Like otherwise stated, the introduction talk between RG and LH at the Polo Lounge is different too. In the french version, the talk is held in italian, like the welcome greeting when LH shows at RG's apartment door ('buona sera').
UPDATE 2014:
purchased quite recemtly the BD version (for much cheaper than the DVD and the VHS in their respective times!). I recommend it: image is crisp and fully reveals the pastel tones chosen for the movie ambiance. Sound is much better (5.1 HD), e.g. when RG meets Sunday at the coffee you can distinctly hear the rumble and crokery tingling of other customers sitting behind & around you...
