The style of this film is so fabulous

I hadn't seen it in years, I'd forgotten how beautiful the sets and clothes are in this movie -- classics that stand the test of time!

They had a "Visual Consultant"--Ferdinando Scarfiotti who, IIRC, was responsible for the character's Armani suits.

I think the stylishness works against the
intentions of the film. It was supposed to be,
according to Gere, a look inside the 2-d world
of a male hustler. It was supposed to
be an indictment of the shallow world of
Beverly Hills sex workers.
Gere just looks too good, and the character is too shrewd, for this to work.

This only works in retrospect. During the period in American Gigolo where Julian is self-absorbed in this lifestyle, it is presented as glamorous without consequence. It is only once Julian's problems begin that American Gigolo defines Julian's lifestyle as shallow.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

You can thank cinematographer John Bailey for that. He was influenced by some of the great European cinematographers, especially Vittorio Storaro. In fact, if you remember the shots of light streaming through the blinds, that's a total homage to Storaro, specifically to the scene in The Conformist in which Trintignant comes to visit his fiancee.

Totally agreed

I completely agree. Everything about this film just "fits."

I love the cinematography and editing , the soundtrack was perfect , the clothes were great , and I think the film was cast superbly.

I think the audience admires Gere's whole cocky , macho, fashionplate thing he had going on ,the film's soundtrack , and , of course , the beauty of Lauren Hutton.

The film is timeless , but it also expertly captures the zeitgeist of the time.

I'm intrigued by how the cinematography was inspired by "The Conformist."

Amicus verus est rara avis.

I posted on Scarfiotti's board how the worlds of 'The Conformist', 'American Gigolo', and 'Scarface' remain captivating because of his genius at holding true to a single vision across departments.

I completely agree. Its great!

Cupcakes and Pink Glitter. Mmmm.

I agree, the style of American Gigolo is fabulous. I was only 15 when it was released in the theaters, but I can recall it being a mega hit with audiences.
