The car

We know what it is--a late 70s Mercedes Benz 450SL. However, one thing I'm puzzled about: Why no head restraints? They became mandatory in the US in 1969 so when the car first came out in 1971, models for the American market would already have them. Julian Kaye's was definitely not even an early model or a direct European (grey market)import because it already had the ugly extended 5mph bumpers which became standard in 1974.

Granted the lack of head restraints makes for a better visual impression as Gere's character drove along the Pacific coast highway with the top down but...it's like those two-shot scenes showing actors through a car's windshield with the rear view mirror obviously--and annoyingly--missing. Just a minor annoyance but annoying nonetheless.

The head restraints for that automobile might have been removable. If so, the director (or whomever) may have had them removed to make Richard look even better when driving the car.
