Michelle Stratton's true role

The widely overlooked subject in American Gigolo is Michelle Stratton's true role.
She is enraptured by the cocky Adonis Julian Kaye and craftily pursues him. Her honed abilities are first revealed when she uncovers where Julian lives, arriving unannounced at his apartment at night wearing a sleuthy trench coat. Her ins and outs in the storyline make her a difficult figure to place. And that's exactly how she wants it as she secretly and jealousy stalks her admired prey for conquest and desire.
There are only very subtle hints throughout the film that this is what's going on. And so it must be or else Julian would find her out. And even when the truth almost does come out, Julian misses it, he could simply never fathom the possibility.
The moment of clarity comes when Julian corners the pimp Leon who admits he framed Julian. But Leon says two critical things when Julian tries and fails to buy him: 'The other side will always pay more.' Leon is not acting alone, he is not the shadowy mastermind, someone else is paying him to frame Julian. And then Leon continues to tell Julian that the bitch in Palm Springs is about to change her mind and identity Julian to the police and spell his end. Who is the financier? Who is the bitch? Michelle.
After Leon's death, Julian ends up incarcerated. Julian is dejected, he refuses Michelle's help, he doesn't want her consumed by scandal. Michelle now sees Julian's true character at the bottom, and admires him, like she desired him when he was on top. As the architect of his downfall, she now becomes his redeemer. Julian asks her why, and she replies 'I had no choice, I love you'. She now has the fallen gigolo all to herself, forever indebted he will be to her for saving him. The femme fatale.

Cherchez la femme.

Some movies are released; others sneak out.

Very interesting.

Looks good on paper.

But I'm not buying it.

Me neither. I believe her love for Julian was real and was willing to give up a privileged life with a well off senator to be with a troubled male prostitute facing jail time. You don't put someone you love in prison yet alone publicly humiliate him just so she can have him all to herself. Remember she is risking public humiliation for adultery and her relationship with a male prostitute being made public.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

She stalked him...

If the movie was done today, the focus would be on that.

Here's to those who wish me well...

Interesting take !! I found it to be boring and slow paced . Julian waits until hes being hunted by the cops before he goes to the Pimp who sent him to the gig in the first place ? This was a one off Gig so he should have went to Leon first asking what the *beep* !! Then he spends alot of time *beep* and just piddling around when hes a suspect a male prostitute on top of that yet hes Leisure in his Investigation. Most people would be super worried when hes put in the Line -up hey DUMMY *beep* is serious go find/talk to *beep* Leon ?? Utter Garbage and 2 hours I will never get back ! Plus one pair of tits and Geres Ass gimme a break in that world . Porch girls dont count just quick pan and scan boobs lol

The movie is not fast-paced, but it's because there's a cat-and-mouse game going on between Detective Sunday and Julian.

Julian has an alibi for the night the victim was killed; he was with Michelle. But he's falling for her, so when Michelle mentions it -- "weren't we together that night?" -- he says, "I wish we were." He's willing to protect her reputation, even if it means tangling with the law.

Now, Julian is innocent of the murder, but being a gigolo is still illegal in California (sad, but true). So he can't bring it up to the police detective because that would be confessing to a crime. And once he's in jail, he will have no one to protect him, and he might get the murder pinned on him anyway. Why? Because as Leon the pimp said, Julian was "frameable" -- a male prostitute from a lousy background with no political connections.

The bitch in Palm Springs wasn't Michelle. It was a person who claimed to have seen his parked car out there.

reply

its a plausible theory once you can believe she truly loves her politican husband
