Wouldn't the rats eating the dead dogs in turn grow larger as well?

That would have been a great ending setting up a sequel featuring giant rats - I'd buy that for a dollar!
I guess everything which eats the dead dogs grows larger but the alligator is the dominant species there so it would eat the enlarged rats as well.
