Hi, I love Alligator, and was wodnering if the new DVD from Lions gate is fully uncut, including the scenes mentioned in the Alternate Verions senction of IMDB's entry for the film. I have not been able to purchase it yet and was curious.
I just bought the Lion's Gate version. From what I can tell, the speed of the frame or the frame rate is a little quicker than 24 frames which is normal speed for an average film made in America. The picture is crisp and surprisingly clear ,but it looks to me Lion's Gate actually took the remastered Anchor Bay UK print since they're frame rate for PAL is 30 speed. When I watched the dvd, all the legs bitten off, all the blood in the water and people chewed up were shown. I also bought the Region 0 version from China and that didn't have some of the scenes shown in the Lion's Gate version. I do believe that everything is intact since the speeds are a little higher than the VHS/television/theatrical releases, unless the 99 minutes has 9 whole minutes of either more credits or alligator chewing up stuff. Personally, I'm happy with finally owning a Region 1 version of Alligator on DVD. It looks really good and its in widescreen!
Hey man, I did a little looking around and it looks like Carlos may be right. Supposedly there was an old vhs version released by Catalina video that included some small extra scenes of dialogue, etc. For example, it supposedly includes a scene of Robert Forster actually making the bomb near the end. What I suspect is that this was footage that was cut intentionally, but put back in for tv showings to pad out the runtime from edits to violence/profanity. So in other words, I'd say the Lion's Gate disc counts as the full uncut version since its the theatrical version, and these extra scenes are just 'filler' for tv. (As with the extended tv cut of Halloween). That's also a good point about the speed up, didn't notice it before. I think you're right about it being taken from the UK anchor bay PAL master. It also has major interlace artifacts, which is a dead giveaway of a PAL port.
Thanks for pointing out that I was correct. I own both the Catalina video version and the second released by Lightning Home video. I own both for having them fully uncut!I'm still going to get the dvd but personally I liket the vhs version better. I hate it when they mess with the color. Might take away the creepiness for the film.
carlos should check his own facts. the catalina version which runs 98 min is not an uncut version. all the gore has been cut out, and extra scenes have been put in for television. catalina mistakenly released this version on home video. the uncut version runs at 91 minutes. the cut version runs at 87 min. i own all three versions.
The Lion's Gate DVD is NOT fully uncut, as has been mentioned below. The original cut of the film included a scene where the alligator attacks a baby in a back yard. The mother is hanging up clothes and the alligator comes crashing through a fence to get at them. The Lions Gate DVD contains all of the violence that was originally included in the rest of the film, but it does not restore the "baby" scene.
The baby scene was shown on television and was not part of the theatrical or cable version of the film. The Lionsgate DVD is the complete theatrical cut of the film. As mentioned earlier, scenes are, or were shot to pad films out for tv showings to make up for bloody violence or profanity that must be edited out. And this scene amounts to nothing anyways. You never even see the Alligator. You only hear a fence breaking or some other such noise, then a shot of the baby. The scene then cuts to the mother on the phone. She rushes back outside and sees her backyard in a shambles and her baby missing. She approaches an overturned clothes basket with which the baby has hidden underneath.
You must never have seen the complete version of this scene. After she lifts the clothes basket and finds the baby underneath, the alligator appears with its mouth wide open and she screams. That's the end of the scene, you never really see it eat them but it's implied. I do remember that on TV, they used to show both versions of the scene, the one where they'd put a commercial break right after she finds the baby, and another version that showed the alligator attacking after she finds the baby safe.
Most are correct, in that what Lionsgate put out on DVD is the theatrical version (the scene with the baby and the clothesline is on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prxKf1eN0r0). Even then, I am not sure if this is truly uncut, as I've seen photos of the party attack near the end with the maid inside the mouth of the Alligator, and it was pretty bloody (so there may still be gore shots that were edited from the theatrical release for ratings).
