underrated

do u think that alligator is one of the most underrated movies ever

reply

Yes, I do. I'm surprised at the strictly medium IMDb user rating. It's a really fun, lively and witty B-horror treat which benefits greatly from Lewis Teague's capable direction, John Sayles' clever tongue-in-cheek script, a cool monster, several boffo creature attack scenes, and, best of all, a terrific cast which includes Robert Forster, Robin Riker, Michael Gazzo, Sydney Lassick, Jack Carter, Dean Jagger, and an especially fantastic turn by Henry Silva, who hilariously sends up his macho screen image as an arrogant big game hunter.

Watched this again the other night for the first time in years. Vastly underrated and underappreciated.

Which circle of hell is mine when I arrive?

I’ve only heard of Robert Forster.

At one stage this was my favourite movie.

I couldn't agree more. Alligator is probably one of the last "animal horror"
films out there and it really was a good one IMO.

I remember seeing this way before I saw Jaws and to be honest, I liked this
one a bit more.

Great White sharks are scary, yes, but they can't attack you out of the water.

Our good buddy "Ramoan" can eat you pretty much anywhere. Land or water.

And I think it has some memorable scenes....

Lurking in the swimming pool then eating the kid (it's rare that movies show
little kids dying but that's what made it so damn scary)

When he's lurking in the alleys and sewers

and of course when he crashed the lavish wedding reception

as cheesy as it is, I still liked it.

I saw when I was really little and it has stayed with me ever since and
I'm 29 now, so yes these goofy ass movies can stick with you!

That's because of censors. Directors are afraid to submit a movie for release if it has such a scene in it because the movie studios often reject them even if they are restricted to older audiences. I think this is a violation of free speech that needs to be corrected.
Tim Burton himself said he hates horror movies that always show the kid escaping without a scratch and that it's not realistic at all which is why his movie "Sleepy Hollow" has a boy as one of the victims.
Scenes like with the swimming pool in "Alligator" are indeed horrible, but that's why they're called *horror* movies. Duh.
It is fictional, so I don't understand any adult who complains. If people can't take watching these disturbing scenes, then they have a choice to watch something else.
Meanwhile, censoring a horror movie just because it chooses to be realistic is something I fully oppose.

This is one of my all-time favorite creature features- from the atmospheric poster to the Saylesian social commentary to the batsh*t crazy Henry Silva, this is pure gold. Pray that they never remake it with terrible CGI.

My appreciation:

I agree that it's very underrated. For a monster movie with a giant gator, it exceeds all expectations in terms of acting, story, balance of gore and humour, its monster and most of all, entertainment.

I'd hate to see a remake, though. I think it's good just the way it is, and has aged very well. Current monster movies are NOWHERE even near Alligator.

Never be complete.

I think it deserves some credit. It's a B-movie and it's got lots of nice actors and cheesy moments where you think "that's not quite right" but you go along with it anyway, and that's how it's supposed to be. Alligator deserves acclaim, even tho it's only a little compared to what other films of it's status get.

Just watched this again since I hadn't seen this since I was a young kid.

I always had memories of this film and certain scenes had stuck in my head. I was a little hesitant to rewatch it again as I thought I'd be disappointed as my memories were probably better than the movie was.

I was expecting poor acting and a cardboard looking alligator and was surprised that this actually exceeded what I remembered.

Definitely one of the better films of its kind.
