I really don't like the part where they kill the child. There is just no need to show this in movies. Why didn't they kill the *beep* dog?

For me a horror film shouldn't have 'kid gloves' on (just realized in this context that's a punny if dark joke). It adds to the full dimension of horror that stays with you and yet even that kill was done in a humorous way as is the whole film's style. But I understand your grief. I'm not advocating "Hostel" style torture porn but I think this movie really went after everybody. No sacred cows or alligators.

I must admit - I was surprised at this part. I think this is the first film of its kind that I saw a child killed. Yes granted Alex Kintner had been killed in Jaws several years previously - but this film Alligator is a creature-feature/tongue-in-cheek film and I was surprised by it. Having said that - I LOVE Alligator.

Time flies like the wind - and fruit flies like bananas! 

I think it's sad if anyone dies, not just children. All dead people are somebody's mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, friend, cousin, etc. I guess one could argue that children's deaths are more sad because they die before they even have a chance to live, but I think all loss of life is equally sad.

I guess Jaws set the bar on that one with Alex Kitner. However, it's been a while since I've seen Alligator. How graphic is that scene in this film? Is it worse than the one in Jaws?

I feel just the opposite. I was surprised when the kid was killed, but positively so. Not because I like seeing kids eaten by alligators, but because it's a breath of fresh air - kids are usually protected in this kind of movie, and it was great to see that there were no such artificial protection in this movie. In this movie, if a kid's in danger he is actually in danger. In most horror or monster films, I remain calm whenever a child is in "danger", because I know there is no way any harm will come to it. And quite frankly, I don't see why kids should be given any special favours, other than the "cute and cuddly" factor which I don't give a toss about.

Anyone ever seen the original Assault On Precinct 13? A 10 year old girl gets shot in the chest on camera and dies.

All life is precious whether it is a child or an animal. Children die by animal deaths in real life so it was not wrong to show a child getting killed, provided it is not with graphic/gratuitous violence.

Ah okay, you are THIS kind of individual. No wonder. If you think that an animal's death is as bad a child's, maybe you should rethink your life.
