CZECH LANGUAGE SCENES
My copy of TTSS doesn't have subtitles for the Czech language scenes. Can anyone tell me what is said in the exchanges Jim P has with the driver who takes him to see the Czech officer in the woods?

shareI actually don't think the scenes were subtitled--I don't recall them being when I caught this on PBS eons ago, and I don't think I've ever seen a copy of it with them. I believe the audience is just supposed to infer what's being said in a general way, via the context--though that's easier to do if one has read the novel first. Repeat viewings do make it easier to surmise what's going on.
shareThey're on the abridged US six episode version:
JP: How are You?share
TD: OK. But the doctor told me I mustn't drive for more than three hours at a time
JP: Open it [trying the back door]
TD: No. You must sit next to me. It's safer ...
JP: Like hell
TD: Also more democratic
JP: Open it
TD: Have you got a pistol?
JP: Open it
TD: Have you got a message for the General?
I'll tell you a story. There's this old woman who can't keep her hands off young blokes. Always grabbing at their balls in the queue. Well it was just beginning to rain ...
JP: Don't move and don't speak.
Get out, Baraku. Slowly.
Put it On.
Walk to the hut.
I'll go and see the General when you come back and when it's safe.
TD: Why? I know it's safe.
JP: Go. If I put the headlights on I can get you easily.
Go. Go. Go.
I'm thinking those must have been added for later video release in the US, because, even though it's been years ago, I could swear there were no subtitles on the version aired by PBS. (I've never watched the truncated US cut on video, only the original UK one.)
shareI have a vague recollection of subtitles being provided when I first saw this in 1979 on TV. A long time ago so I am not sure. The border policeman when Prideaux enters Czechoslovakia, and possibly the driver, actually were Czechs, I believe.
