That Gig Has Got Potential

I'm not real up to date on how royalties actually work, but since the show used a rerecorded version of "My Life", without Billy Joel singing, doesn't that mean it wouldn't have been that expensive to feature the original theme? I thought the real problem came in when shows used the actual recorded songs from the artists("WKRP", "Happy Days", "Quantum Leap")?

Was this just a choice made by Paramount/CBS because "Shake Me Loose" was originally intended to be the theme song, or was it really about the royalties?

Billy Joel still wrote the song. Even if he didn't sing it, he would get royalties from the song. Also whatever company has the rights to the song would get royalties, too.
