Any Good?

Tom Hanks in a wig? I don't know. Sounds kinda funny. Is this worth adding to my Tom collection?

I watched this show religiously as a kid. Watching it now as an adult 27 years later, it's interesting that the shows main hook (two guys in drag) is the most negligible part of the show. By the second episode, the hotel has accepted Kip and Henry there, so there is no further need for the disguise. If anything, the show is about two men living in a hotel for women. But the show was marketed as a "men in drag" sitcom, so we get a few obligatory scenes of them in unconvincing drag, but apart from that, there is no need for them to continue the charade. So far in going through the first season, I've seen a couple shows where they go throughout the entire episode without putting on the dresses even once.

One thing I will say is that the cast is great. It's easy to see that Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari were destined for stardom. Yes, Peter Scolari. People love to joke about how he faded into obscurity while his co-star went on to be the number one box office star, but they forget that Peter went on to do Newhart for eight seasons after this and was nominated for an Emmy numerous times. Also Wendy Jo Sperber, Holland Taylor, Donna Dixon. They were able to elevate mediocre sitcom writing into something more.

That's the thing about this one, the actors(especially Tom, Peter, and Holland) did their best with what they got here, as far as the writing. The scripts had charm at times, but this is the same production team that would go on to do "Full House" and "Family Matters", need I say more?

Is it worth owning? I think so.. I was pretty young when it originally aired, but I know the show was somewhat of a cult favorite, and a lot of people wrote letters when it was given the ax. It's a fun show with a certain feel good quality that's really lacking these days in television, but you can expect to cringe sometimes with some of the writing..

In some ways, I actually think the second season was a little funnier than the first, and we're never going to get a second season unless people buy this one.

If you have a Tom Hanks collection, by all means get it. It shows him nicely rising above the banal scripts and low production values as a very young man. And the hairstyles and clothes are a hoot. The interplay between Tom and Peter is one thing that worked well.

This show does not, however, hold up. I remember watching it when it was new and it was a mildly entertaining B series with a cast that was much better than the production. The jokes are mostly one note jokes repeated ad nauseum - ie Amy panting for Peter and not ignoring Tom and Tom (and me) drooling over Donna doing her career Marilyn impression.

Some Like it Hot was done 2 decades earlier - what does this advance from then?

Just my opinion. Your mileage may differ.

Just got my DVD's. Worth watching over and over again. Of course, I still remember all the dialogue.

I just recently bought season 1. Don't think I've watched the show before. The jokes are mostly really great. Even my girlfriend, who rarely likes old stuff, laughes a lot!

Ahhh...Sonny.
Sonny, Sonny, Sonny....
