I Blame ABC
Has anyone else watching the second season on DVD(there's got to be at least one of you out there..) noticed how the episodes seemed to be aired out of sequence? I never realized the series originally aired like this; I've been so used to seeing the show in production order in syndication. Kip cheats on Sonny awful early in the season if you go by this order of things. "One For You and One For Me" is one of the last episodes to appear, yet, they talk about how it's their first meeting at "60 Seconds Street". Henry's out jogging in an episode that supposedly aired on Christmas day; not to mention how the apartment jumps around from looking as it did the first season, to having that ugly dark shade of green.
If you combine the fact that the episodes don't seem to run in sequence, with the fact that the show vanished for over a month(early in the season, I might add), and the fact that it was preempted on more than one occasion, it's kind of easy to see why it might not have been retaining an audience's attention.
To ABC's credit, my assumption is that perhaps the plan was to broadcast what they thought to be the better episodes first, in an effort to keep the show on the air, but if that was in fact the plan, it certainly fell flat.
