Well, I think it was shown twice to kind of close the storyline.
It is pretty senseless, because the ship arriving in New York would have been just as good and then having the scene where you see the last days of the girl's father, but Fulci, it seems, wanted to make sure that we know the boat is coming from “the island“ (put in a DADADAAA, if you want).
I have seen seven or eight of his movies and, believe me, this is his best, most straight and even most logical shot movie.
In all his other movies you are constantly scratching your head, thinking WTF?
But maybe the marketing wanted to have a Zombie in the very first shot of this movie, no, even in the very first second?
