I saw this film on television, and there was a brief interruption which left me wondering: when Stevenson is first located by Wells in San Francisco, does he get the key from Wells then, or is he interrupted by the maid before he can get his hands on it? I assumed that's what the chase was all about. If he did get the key then, when does Wells get it back (Stevenson is hit in traffic, ending the chase)?

The maid interrupts Stevenson before he gets his hands on the key.
Stevenson bolts and Wells gives chase.

I think that since he felt obliged to bring Stevenson back to the 19th century and had such a hard time locating him, is why he gave chase.
