This movie is awesome

I've been wanting to see this for a really long time, and I finally got a hold of a copy thanks to my local library. It did not disappoint - and it's a good thing too, considering it has such a great premise. It wouldn't work though without the incredible lead performance from Malcolm McDowell. He really makes me believe he's a guy from 1893 wandering around in 1979. And while it is an exciting and suspenseful thriller, it also pays a lot of attention to the characters, and raises some very interesting questions about what the HG Wells and the Jack The Rippers of the 1890s would think of the future as it exists now. I think they (especially Wells) would greet it with a mixture of amazement and disappointment, just like in the movie!

I totally agree! I just watched it today and totally fell in love with McDowell's HG Wells. It was such a great movie.

I just watched today, and loved it. A little bit slow in the middle, but other than that it was a wonderful film.

I agree. This film is absolutely delightful. Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen were terrific in the lead roles. Moreover, David Warner made for a memorably chilling Jack the Ripper. Great score by Miklos Rozsa, too.

It is mentioned on the DVD that this was a mistake in the filming of the movie and it was overlooked and not corrected before the movie was released.

Watching this movie itself is traveling back in time.

It's time after time after time.

Brilliant movie.

Ha! That's very true.

I thought McDowell's performance was passionate and believable. For an actor who would at times just mail in camp (see: The Pass and Blue Thunder), this showed a deeply romantic side he rarely bothered with. A fine entry in his catalog, IMO.
