Why All The Hate?

This was a cute, original little movie when it came out. A wonderful surprise at the time. Does it hold up well? Meh. But it's a lot better, even now, than a lot of the comments on this board would suggest.

The story is enthralling, the acting is engaging to say the least, McDowell and Steenbergen had excellent chemistry, and the direction was spirited, if a bit inconsistent.

It was a memorable movie experience when I saw it at 18 in 1979, a great date-movie (and I was even on a date). I'm glad I saw it then and I enjoyed rematching it recently.

I fell for the movie when I was 16, in 1980 when we got cable and they played it on HBO a lot. I'd get up in the middle of the night to watch it. A few years later, I got to see it on the big screen in a now-defunct art house theater in Atlanta called The Rhodes. Over the years, I've probably seen it 35-40 times. It was a big thrill for me back in 2003 when I got to meet Nick Meyer at the Creative Screenwriting EXPO in LA and tell him how much I love this movie.

PS: Ever read the novel based on Karl Alexander's original short story? It's absolutely wonderful, if you can find it.

I find it holds up, I've loved it since I was very little in the late '70s.
