Malcolm Mcdowell was well cast as HG well. He played his role straight and invested his character with a lot of humanity. David Warner was the opposite. He was a hateful and cold blooded intellectual killer, and he nailed it. Mary Steenburgen was just wonderful. She had a joyful, innocent, sensual, and lively quality about her. She had wonderful chemistry with Mcdowell. It's no wonder they got married afterwards.
The script was quite witty and it toyed with our fancy of time travel and instead of concentrating too much on the gimmicks of time travel, it dealt with characters and critically examined our society.
Mary is delightful and interestingly enough though she espouses the tenets of feminism, she displays wonderful dollops of femininity, which is not always easy !
Feminism in 1979 was very confusing! Women were back to wanting to be sexy and glamorous, but still close enough to the height of women's lib that they still believed in it. ________________ there will be snark
